My wife has been a photojournalist for 15 years. As the wars unfolded, I recall that amongst many of the males in the profession there was this adventurist mind-set about shooting the war. Maybe they were eager for the survivalist adrenaline rush. Man and gear staying alive in Hell. Boys are like that. Movies give us this romantic notion of a tortured mind and an invincible strength. <br />
<br />
This young man, on his home-made combat-ready rolling chair, is the embodiment of how well prepared I felt many of these men would be had they actually gone.<br />

There's always this character lurking around in my mind. He scrawled out of my head shortly after my leg was amputated. He landed on the flip-side of my medication chart (pictured in a post a few months ago regarding atheism). I haven't a name for him yet, nor am I even sure where he's going. Born from my love of the macabre and probably the narcotics, he is a strolling figure of mystery, magic, and intensity.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For me, the excitement of being an artist is in the
challenge of noticing the grandeur in a sublime moment, then interpreting that
into a tangible scene of the human soul, alive and wild. I create figurative
art so that I can share the energy of the human spirit as a raw and powerful
force of imagination and perseverance. I am inspired by dignity and
determination; traits often found in the virtues of the underdog. I’m painting
for those who are strong in the mind and heart. Hoping to inspire empathy for
those who struggle, and awe for those who overcome.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Integrity is very important to me. The characters I create
are a composite of emotions and impressions that I get from a particular person
I pass, or see riding through the streets of the city. I will sketch them in my
pocket book, catching their spirit and gesture as quickly as I can before the
fleeting moment is gone. As a passionate environmentalist and a fixer of simple
machines, I am naturally in love with bicycles and the wonderful people who
ride them. The materials I use are simple and basic: wood panels, raw ink,
vinyl house paint, and oil.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>These
lend themselves to the esthetic of wild simplicity and allow for great gesture
and depth. Virtues I seek in each person I represent in a work of art.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I spent many years learning to paint in the more traditional
style of oil on canvas, but it is drawing, and the expressive energy of ink
splashed, and paint thrown, that I love. My style is rooted in realism and
figurative drawing, with abstract lines that become atmosphere and figures who
are alive and present.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In creating
this semi-fictional menagerie of those who impress me the most, I’m trying to
capture the madness and bliss of city life.</div>

It bothers me that the common perception of Atheists is that we are
devil worshiping, evil people, with no morals or values. At the bottom
of this page is a link to a refreshing study and an affront to that
misperception.<br />
<br />
As the study shows, Atheists simply do not need the threat of going to
hell to convince them to do what is right. They do it because this is
how people should behave. Atheists do not worship the Devil. They do not
believe in either a superior being or its evil counter part. They have
no need of religion. <br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih6v7v7Ohpjj5tVo8PPP-eZWmIOqGfgsqu1UuPUk9REHEBCJunHLy2ZU55-Z8yZEwzuBetrAoWNdt2VEBmofsSBcJGQVsC61ffXaH-vZit9cmrDYxvrs6_pSVRDp3HKZGo96G_eJ4foM0L/s1600/yo-yoMan2.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih6v7v7Ohpjj5tVo8PPP-eZWmIOqGfgsqu1UuPUk9REHEBCJunHLy2ZU55-Z8yZEwzuBetrAoWNdt2VEBmofsSBcJGQVsC61ffXaH-vZit9cmrDYxvrs6_pSVRDp3HKZGo96G_eJ4foM0L/s320/yo-yoMan2.jpg" width="233" /></a>Atheists often see religion as an archaic way of teaching society the
basic laws of behavior. Pretty much every religion shares the common
message of treating our fellow people with kindness and not causing harm
against them, and each has it's own frightening results of not minding
the rules. Modern times brought people together to form governments,
which laid down similar rules for citizens to follow with the threat of
punishment if the rules were broken. At this point religion lost its
universal control over all the people of the land and it became a
personal choice for one to follow, or not (depending on where you live).
Fortunately, our country was founded by people who thought that men and
women of all beliefs could live together peacefully as long as they
obeyed the common laws of the land. This would be why they adamantly
called for the separation of church and state. So that no singular
religious types could oblige others to follow beliefs they did not
share. (That is what churches and synagogues, etc. are for...members of
each religious organization should indeed follow the rules set forth by
the interpreters of their holy books.). One needn't present examples to
express their disgust over how very often those who are religious
themselves fail to remain true to the standards of their beliefs.<br />
<br />
Atheism is freedom from interpretation. It is the faith of believing in
yourself and being responsible for all that you do. When one is true to
themselves their character is strong and optimistic. That's what this
world needs. Not a collision of ideologies gripping over private issues,
but people who are courteous to their neighbors, who lend a helping
hand and kindly mind their own business.<br />

<br />
First painting of the year. Inspired by the vast amount of Americans who've been laid off since the economic crash began. Our jobs are being steadily wiped out. If you're still holding on to that job you've had for ten years, you are probably under paid, over worked, giving up benefits, and on the brink of losing your mind as you absorb the responsibilities of all those who've been let-go before you. It helps if you make airplane noises while viewing this. <br />

<h1><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">"Citizens United vs. FEC" vinyl and acrylic paint with india ink on Birch wood, raw steel frame, 24x24x1.5 copyright 2011 Brian Morgan</span></h1><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">While hundreds of thousands of Americans are being laid-off, or taking pay cuts, people at the top of the economic ladder are reaping record profits and sharing none of the wealth. If the Occupy Wall Street movement is about anything, it is about this economic inequality. The recent 2010 Supreme Court decision for Citizens United vs. The Federal Election Committee grants corporations the same rights as people and therefore has opened the floodgates for corporate spending on elections. Now, corporate money can control whom we have in office and what they do when they get there. All in the name of keeping the rich richer. This corporate greed and power is threatening to control our democracy. If the Supreme Court believes that a corporation is a person, then this painting is my interpretation of what that person looks like.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">Mother Jones just wrote a story about this today (12/15/11) and it supports this very scary interpretation of the law. Corporations are not people. Real people do not have hundreds of millions of dollars which they can give to political parties so they'll pass laws allowing them to abuse their neighbor's rights and health. If the Supreme Court wants to consider corporations people, then they should also consider a reasonable cap on campaign donations. Something that all real people could have an equal chance at donating, so that all people have an equal voice in their government. A cap of say $100.00 per citizen. By publicly financing campaigns and providing ANY citizen with the ability to use that money for their election bid, the game would be open to the hundreds of thousands of honest businessmen and women, educators, environmentalists, and hard working middle-class Americans to run for office. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";"> </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">It is time that we are governed by people who actually represent what is best for the people of the nation as a whole. No more rich guys bickering over ridiculous religious ideologies while sending our young and vulnerable citizens to die in wars that these pricks profit from heavily. Dick Chenney boasted about super-profits for his Halliburton corporation which runs most of the domestic needs for the troops. A contract the Bush Administration handed over at more than twice the highest bidding estimate of any other contender for that contract. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">Some people think the government is itself the problem. The real problem is that a majority of those in government are simply cronies for the big business' of this country. Or they are simply top people from those companies who temporarily relinquish their positions so that they can get into office and make sure their companies get those super profits...like Dick Chenney. These politicians, mostly Republicans, serve only their corporate donor's needs and make a heafty profit for doing so.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";"><br />

PBR ,other beverages and "orderves" will be served. Seriously, why'd we borrow that word from the French and not Americanize the spelling? "Hor Dourves" ohh, so very chic! <br />
Any way, the "Fixie" guy's prosthetic wheel thing will be there! Yep, and lots of prints of all the work. Come by and take a look and have some PBR on me. Word. I had a lot of fun throwing the speed lines for that one. Using tape to mask off his body and bike, the vinyl paint was kind of 'rhythmically thrown 'Jackson Pollack' style. Its really a joy to paint that way once you learn to control flying paint lines! <br />
<br />
<br />
Same goes for the fun blue lines breezing around the one-footed man all inner-tubed to his home-made prosthetic bike leg. That one is called, "Fixie." Inspired by the Flogging Molly's song, "Float," ...a sample of the lyics:<br />
<br />
"Singled out for who you are<br />
It takes all types to judge a man<br />
Feel, that's all you can.<br />
Ah, but don't, no don't sink the boat<br />
That you built, you built to keep afloat." <br />
<br />
In this case, he floats the concrete oceans of life.Brian Morganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287586937556225565noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705703226645716903.post-82557579669880714022011-03-29T11:01:00.000-07:002011-03-29T11:51:48.536-07:00<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioMVXLapLgujxagu19QWeOqFlhCbXGEjLxVuAoTZlh9eV24QhpeUjI-mi0_JK4Qfh_JqE4sdsiKZB92vcFRX90OHf4khecN0HIHraUJaNXmUIxSn0RrqVHNi5dzaZT-MG4_gq_e8MBkcBs/s1600/Sepia+MT+image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioMVXLapLgujxagu19QWeOqFlhCbXGEjLxVuAoTZlh9eV24QhpeUjI-mi0_JK4Qfh_JqE4sdsiKZB92vcFRX90OHf4khecN0HIHraUJaNXmUIxSn0RrqVHNi5dzaZT-MG4_gq_e8MBkcBs/s320/Sepia+MT+image.jpg" width="207" /></a></div>Got the Dirtbombs blasting away on the Yamaha. Starting a new piece about Marshall 'Major' Taylor, 1899 World Cycling Champion. <br />
<br />
I'm searching for an explosion of speed in this ode to one bad-ass cyclist. A man who rose to the top during the turn of the last century...despite being an African American. He was raised in Indiana, starts riding in his late teens and wins his first race at age 22. Racism keeps his name and a couple of cycling's fastest records off the charts in 1896, but in 1899 he breaks his own record for a 1:19 mile win for the World Championship and the World record. <br />
<br />
Eventually he travels to Europe and makes a hell of an impression, as well as a lot of good friends. He continues to race at the top until around 1904. Then, sadly, poor business decisions and illness leave him pennyless and he winds up living in the YMCA downtown Chicago. Where he dies at age 53.<br />
<br />
I hope I can do him justice in this painting, he deserved much more.<br />

Made a spot on the Channel 2 local news Friday morning. This is a link to it. They show the Daley piece and the exhibit. My first 15 seconds of fame. Hopefully the other 14 min. 45 sec. are in the brew machine. <br />

About a year ago I saw the man who inspired this painting. He was rolling lazily along the paths of Humboldt Park on his way to meet up with some other vendors nearby. He's been brewing in my head ever since. I'm planning on doing the lettering in blue and red, hand written, like you see on the local carts. Some more inking to do, but the gist of it is here. Another piece for the show this July. <br />

The work will be based on the theme of the bicycle and it's many uses in the urban landscape. I am inspired by sleek, fast, gnarly messengers, food vendors and their customized mobile resturaunts, the clowns on the tall bike contraptions, and of course, the Latino's in Humbodlt Park with their bad-ass low-riders and chromed up cruisers. Here, I am working on the first of the series for the show. These cyclists are sending a flock of pigeons into flight.Brian Morganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287586937556225565noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705703226645716903.post-65090272567418140742010-12-10T18:35:00.000-08:002010-12-10T18:35:58.228-08:00While scoping out the meter shot needed to create Mayor Daley's lapel pin, we ran across this guy selling cotton candy at 17 degrees fahrenheit. Balls! The rig will remain on the mind.<br />
As for the meter, I just finished printing a crop of this onto a high-gloss paper and made a little tiny lapel pin for the Mayor. This qualifies the title. Will soon post finished piece to website. <br />

Titled, "Meter Remains As A Courtesy To Cyclists."<br />
Mayor Daley is the "love him/hate him" Mayor of the last decade and a half. What remains of his tenure are beautiful downtown streets, a comparatively well funded art scene, a half-assed recycling program, a gorgeous park where there used to be an airport, crappy schools, normal violence, and these meters randomly left behind for cyclists to lock their bikes to. The meters being replaced by pay boxes on almost every street and no more free parking while one is visiting the park. You got to admit that Daley has always been true to himself. Few politicians remain as authentic as he has after serving for as many years. This is from the "Misery Is The River Of The World," painting and is as of yet untitled. I like the working title of, "The Damned On The River Styx." I have a beautiful piece of gnarled old drift wood acquired from the Old Town Aquarium on Wells to be varnished. This will be worked into the underside of the boat as a stand, but it will look like the bottom of the river below. The bronze was poured by Marshall Svendsen (trueformproductions.com) in three different pieces. Somehow I will have to put a finish on the metal, I'm not sure exactly how I will do that yet.
